Mamak is just one of those hip restaurants in Sydney that never seems to go out of fashion! It still has lines outside the restaurant every night of the week. Knowing that queue would take a while, a friend and I decided to rock up to the restaurant at early on a Thursday night for a table for 5. We arrived at around 6pm and the restaurant staff seated us about 20 minutes later. This began a 3 hour food odyssey at Mamak.
Mamak is popular for a reason. The cheap and delicious food! For this blog entry, I have decided to let the food speak for themselves. Click on the pictures and you can see what they think of themselves! Warning, don't drool too much!
I see you have met Murtabak filled with lamb! What a star! The chilli sauce and spicy curry dips do a good job in waking your senses! A great dish to start the night!
Rojak is one amazing dish. I can't believe I haven't discovered this dish until now. Sweet cucumber slices were such a refreshing contrast to the thick, spicy and rich peanut sauce. The fried tofu with prawn and coconut fritters were just the perfect combination with the rest of the dish. Must order dish!
Nasi lemak is probably the national dish for a reason! It combines the elements of simple things to make a dish with diverse textures, great contrasts and amazing spices.
The chicken satay here is probably one of the best chicken satay around. They are small so one is often not enough! Especially combined with the beautiful sweet and spicy satay sauce. I usually spread the satay sauce over rice or dip the cucumber and onion bits into the sauce for more enjoyable times. Such an indulgence!
Such a refreshing tea with the ginger! It's warm and sweet, perfect accompaniment for the mains or dessert!
Speaking of desserts...
Cendol is essentially tapioca texture starch noodles with syrup and coconut milk topped with crunchy shaved ice. Perfect for cooling down all the spices from the mains!
You also can't go pass the dessert roti! Paper-thin, crispy and a lot of fun! Dip the roti in ice cream and you will be smiling for a while!
My other favourites from Mamak also include the beautifully tender Kari kambing (spicy lamb curry) and Kacang panjang belacan (spicy long beans with chillies and shrimp paste). So many people can't be wrong about the great food at Mamamk!
